Romans 8:5

King James Bible

"For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit."

Commentary

Paul identifies those whose fundamental orientation follows the flesh—the fallen human nature opposed to God. This describes people whose life patterns and desires are controlled by sin's power rather than divine influence. The mind actively focuses on and pursues fleshly concerns—self-centered ambitions, sinful pleasures, and worldly values. This mindset shapes decisions and priorities, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of spiritual deadness. In contrast, Paul describes believers whose lives are directed by the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence. This fundamental reorientation occurs through faith in Christ, marking the essential difference between the saved and unsaved. Spirit-led people naturally focus on divine concerns—holiness, love, eternal perspectives, and God's will. This mindset produces life and peace, demonstrating the transformative power of the new nature in Christ.
