Romans 8:4

King James Bible

"That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

Commentary

Paul explains that Christ's work enables the law's righteous requirements to be accomplished in believers—not through human effort but through divine empowerment. This fulfillment refers to the law's true intent of producing holy living, now made possible through the Spirit's transforming work. Walking 'after the flesh' describes a life pattern controlled by sinful human nature and its desires. Paul contrasts two ways of living, emphasizing that those in Christ have departed from this self-centered orientation that characterized their former state. The alternative lifestyle follows the Holy Spirit's guidance and draws on His power for daily conduct. This Spirit-directed walk represents the practical means by which the law's righteousness becomes reality in the believer's experience.
