Romans 8:11

King James Bible

"But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."

Commentary

Paul establishes the condition of indwelling—the same Spirit who accomplished Christ's resurrection actively resides within believers. This connects the believer directly to God's resurrection power, emphasizing the Spirit's identity through His greatest act. The repetition reinforces God the Father as the agent of resurrection, highlighting the divine authority and power at work. This parallel structure emphasizes the certainty of what follows—the same God who acted then will act again. The promise extends resurrection power to believers' physical bodies, with 'quicken' meaning to make alive or energize. This addresses both present spiritual vitality and future bodily resurrection, showing the comprehensive nature of redemption. The means of transformation is specified—through the indwelling Spirit Himself. This closing phrase creates a literary circle, returning to the Spirit's presence as both the condition and the instrument of believers' resurrection life.
