Psalms 91:7

King James Bible

"A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee."

Commentary

This vivid imagery depicts overwhelming destruction surrounding the believer—with enemies or calamities falling on both sides in battle-like devastation. The escalating numbers (thousand to ten thousand) emphasize the totality of danger, while 'thy side' and 'right hand' indicate immediate proximity to peril. Despite being surrounded by catastrophe, the psalmist promises divine protection that creates an impenetrable barrier around the faithful. This stark contrast highlights God's selective preservation of those who trust in Him, fulfilling the psalm's earlier promise of refuge under His wings.
