Psalms 91:1

King James Bible

"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."

Commentary

The 'secret place' refers to the inner sanctuary of God's presence—a place of intimate communion and refuge. In Hebrew thought, dwelling implies continuous habitation rather than occasional visits, suggesting a lifestyle of remaining close to God who is addressed here as 'most High' (El Elyon), emphasizing His supreme sovereignty. The promise for those who dwell with God is protective covering, pictured as a shadow that shields from danger and heat. 'Almighty' (El Shaddai) highlights God's all-sufficient power to protect, while 'abide' reinforces the permanence of this divine shelter for those who make God their dwelling place.
