Psalms 82:8

King James Bible

"Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations."

Commentary

The psalmist urgently calls for God to take action and execute righteous judgment over the world. This plea follows the psalm's condemnation of corrupt human judges, demanding that the supreme Judge intervene where earthly justice has failed. The basis for God's universal judgment is His ultimate sovereignty—all nations belong to Him as His inheritance. This affirms that no earthly power stands outside God's authority, echoing the ancient Near Eastern concept of divine kingship over all peoples.
