Psalms 82:6

King James Bible

"I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High."

Commentary

God addresses Israel's judges/rulers, calling them 'gods' (Hebrew: elohim) because they act as His representatives in administering justice. This designation emphasizes their divine appointment and authority to judge on earth, though they remain mortal beings under God's ultimate sovereignty. This phrase clarifies their true nature—despite their god-like judicial role, they are subordinate to God as His children. The title 'most High' (Elyon) underscores God's supreme position above these earthly judges, reminding them of their accountability to Him.
