Psalms 27:5

King James Bible

"For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock."

Commentary

David expresses confidence that God provides protective shelter during crisis, using 'pavilion' (a royal tent) to suggest being welcomed into the king's own dwelling. This imagery conveys both the intimacy of divine protection and God's sovereign power to shield His people from harm. The parallel phrase intensifies the first by referencing the tabernacle—Israel's sacred tent of worship—specifically its innermost, hidden areas where God's presence dwelt. This suggests protection not just in God's royal quarters but in His holy presence itself, emphasizing spiritual refuge beyond physical safety. The imagery shifts from concealment to elevation, picturing God placing the psalmist on high, stable ground above danger. In ancient warfare, controlling rocky heights meant strategic advantage and security, symbolizing how God's protection includes both hiding His people and establishing them in positions of strength.
