Psalms 27:4

King James Bible

"One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple."

Commentary

David declares his singular, consuming passion—to be in God's presence above all else. The repetition of desire and seeking emphasizes this is not a passing wish but a lifelong pursuit that orders all other priorities. The psalmist longs for permanent residence in God's dwelling place, likely referring to the tabernacle or temple where God's presence was specially manifest. This represents an unbroken communion with God rather than mere occasional visits for worship. David's purpose in dwelling with God is twofold: contemplating God's splendor and seeking divine wisdom through meditation and prayer. The temple context suggests both worship and receiving guidance, painting a picture of intimate relationship rather than distant reverence.
