Psalms 27:3

King James Bible

"Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident."

Commentary

David envisions being surrounded by an enemy army in siege formation, a real threat he faced multiple times as a warrior-king. The military imagery of encampment suggests prolonged danger rather than a passing threat, emphasizing the severity of the circumstances. Despite overwhelming odds, David declares his inner resolve remains unshaken. This courage stems not from self-reliance but from the trust in God expressed throughout the psalm, showing that faith can overcome natural human terror. The parallelism intensifies from static siege to active warfare, suggesting escalating danger. David acknowledges that threats may move from potential to actual combat, yet his response remains unchanged. "This" refers back to seeking God's presence in His house (v. 4), revealing that David's confidence is anchored in dwelling with the Lord. His assurance comes not from military strategy but from spiritual communion, making his boldness unshakeable regardless of earthly circumstances.
