Psalms 18:50

King James Bible

"Great deliverance giveth he to his king; and sheweth mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore."

Commentary

God provides remarkable victories and rescue to His chosen ruler. The phrase emphasizes both the magnitude of God's saving acts and the special relationship between the divine King and His earthly representative. The parallel structure reinforces God's covenant loyalty (hesed) to the one He has consecrated with oil. "Anointed" (mashiach) marks the king as divinely appointed, anticipating the Messianic promise. The promise extends beyond David personally to his royal lineage in perpetuity, echoing the Davidic covenant of 2 Samuel 7. This eternal dimension transforms a thanksgiving psalm into a prophetic declaration of God's enduring kingdom plan.
