Psalms 18:31

King James Bible

"For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God?"

Commentary

This rhetorical question asserts the LORD's (Yahweh's) exclusive divinity, challenging any competing claims to godhood. In the ancient Near Eastern context where polytheism dominated, David boldly declares that only Israel's covenant God truly deserves the title 'God.' The rock metaphor emphasizes God's unshakeable strength and reliability as a refuge. This parallel question reinforces the first by using imagery common in Hebrew poetry, where 'rock' signifies both protection in battle and an immovable foundation for life.
