Psalms 18:3

King James Bible

"I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies."

Commentary

The psalmist declares a deliberate choice to cry out to God in times of trouble. This reflects the Hebrew practice of invoking God's covenant name (YHWH), expressing both personal relationship and trust in divine intervention. This parenthetical affirmation emphasizes God's inherent praiseworthiness, suggesting that calling upon Him is not merely pragmatic but an act of worship. The phrase grounds the psalmist's confidence in God's proven character and past mighty deeds. The result of calling upon God is presented as certain deliverance from hostile forces. This cause-and-effect structure reveals the psalmist's faith that praise and prayer directly connect to God's saving action, a theme David often expressed from his experience as a warrior-king.
