Psalms 18:24

King James Bible

"Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight."

Commentary

David declares that God has rewarded or repaid him, using judicial language that portrays God as a righteous judge. The 'therefore' connects to previous verses where David maintained his innocence before God, showing this is the conclusion of his defense. The reward corresponds to David's covenant faithfulness and moral integrity, not claiming sinless perfection but rather wholehearted devotion to God's ways. In the context of fleeing from Saul, David had multiple opportunities for revenge but chose to honor God's anointed. Clean hands symbolize innocent actions and pure motives, emphasizing that God's judgment is based on divine perception rather than human opinion. The phrase 'in his eyesight' underscores that God sees beyond external appearances to evaluate true moral character.
