Psalms 18:12

King James Bible

"At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire."

Commentary

God's radiant presence pierces through darkness, depicted as an overwhelming light that precedes His appearance. This theophany language echoes Mount Sinai encounters where divine glory manifests as brilliant, unapproachable light. The dense storm clouds that typically conceal now give way before God's luminous presence. These clouds serve as both His chariot and veil in Hebrew poetry, but here they part to reveal His power. These elements emerge as divine weapons of judgment, recalling the plagues of Egypt and volcanic imagery. The psalmist portrays God as a warrior whose very presence unleashes destructive forces against His enemies.
