Proverbs 16:9

King James Bible

"A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps."

Commentary

Humans actively make plans and chart their course through life, exercising the will and intellect God has given them. In Hebrew wisdom literature, the 'heart' represents the seat of thought and intention, emphasizing that planning is a natural human activity. Despite human planning, God ultimately guides the actual outcome and path taken. This contrast ('but') reveals the paradox of divine sovereignty working through human responsibility—our plans matter, yet God's providential control ensures His purposes prevail.
