Proverbs 16:5

King James Bible

"Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished."

Commentary

Pride dwelling in the heart—not merely external arrogance—is utterly detestable to God, reflecting a fundamental opposition to His sovereignty. The Hebrew term for 'abomination' (to'evah) indicates something that violates the divine order, emphasizing that internal pride corrupts one's relationship with God. This idiom suggests forming alliances or agreements, possibly referring to conspiracies among the proud or attempts to escape consequences through human solidarity. In ancient Near Eastern culture, joining hands symbolized making covenants or pacts for mutual protection. No amount of human scheming or collective strength can prevent God's justice from reaching the proud person. This certainty of divine retribution underscores that pride inevitably leads to judgment, regardless of earthly power or alliances.
