Proverbs 16:33

King James Bible

"The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD."

Commentary

This refers to the ancient practice of casting lots (similar to dice or drawing straws) to make decisions, with the lots gathered in one's lap or a fold of clothing. Casting lots was common in Israel for determining God's will in matters ranging from dividing land to selecting priests. While humans perform the physical act of casting lots, the outcome is entirely determined by God's sovereign control. This contrast between human action and divine determination teaches that even seemingly random events fall under God's providence, affirming His ultimate authority over all circumstances.
