Proverbs 16:29

King James Bible

"A violent man enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good."

Commentary

The Hebrew word for "violent" (חָמָס) encompasses both physical brutality and moral corruption, while "enticeth" suggests deliberate seduction through persuasion or false promises. This warns that those given to violence actively recruit others, using charm or manipulation to mask their destructive nature. The consequence of yielding to such enticement is being guided down a morally corrupt path—"not good" in Hebrew wisdom literature signifies departure from God's righteous standards. This progression from enticement to active leading emphasizes how association with violent people gradually corrupts one's own moral compass.
