Proverbs 16:19

King James Bible

"Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud."

Commentary

This phrase elevates humility and association with the poor or marginalized as morally superior. In ancient Israel's wisdom tradition, "lowly" refers to those without social status or wealth, suggesting that genuine character matters more than social advancement. "Spoil" implies ill-gotten gains from conquest or exploitation, activities often associated with arrogant leaders. The proverb warns that sharing in material success achieved through pride ultimately corrupts one's character and relationships with both God and others.
