Philippians 4:9

King James Bible

"Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."

Commentary

Paul references his comprehensive teaching through four channels: formal instruction (learned), apostolic tradition (received), oral proclamation (heard), and personal example (seen). This emphasizes that Christian discipleship involves both doctrinal knowledge and practical observation of lived faith. A simple imperative that transforms knowledge into action. Paul insists that authentic faith requires active implementation, not merely intellectual agreement or passive reception. The promise links obedient practice to divine presence—specifically God as the source of peace. This echoes the preceding verse about God's peace guarding hearts, but here emphasizes God's personal presence rather than just His gift of peace.
