Philippians 4:14

King James Bible

"Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction."

Commentary

Paul commends the Philippians for their good actions despite his previous statement about learning contentment in all circumstances. The transition word "notwithstanding" signals that while Paul doesn't depend on their help for his contentment, he still deeply values their support. The word "communicate" means to share in or participate with—the Philippians entered into partnership with Paul's sufferings through their practical support. This reflects the early Christian principle of koinonia (fellowship), where believers actively shared in each other's hardships as one body.
