Matthew 7:6

King James Bible

"Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you."

Commentary

Jesus warns against sharing sacred truths with those who show contempt for spiritual matters. In Jewish culture, dogs and swine were unclean animals representing those hostile to God's ways, suggesting discernment is needed when presenting the gospel to those who would only mock or blaspheme it. The imagery depicts how those who despise holy things will treat precious spiritual truths as worthless, crushing them underfoot like pigs would trample pearls while searching for food. This emphasizes the futility of forcing spiritual insights on those who have no capacity to value them. Beyond merely rejecting the message, hostile recipients may attack the messenger with violence. The savage imagery of wild animals turning on someone suggests that indiscriminate sharing of sacred truths can provoke persecution rather than produce fruit.
