Matthew 6:34

King James Bible

"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

Commentary

Jesus commands his listeners to stop anxiously worrying about tomorrow's needs and uncertainties. This directive follows his teaching about God's provision and challenges the human tendency to let future concerns dominate present living. Tomorrow will bring its own concerns when it arrives, suggesting that future problems don't require today's mental energy. This personification of 'tomorrow' emphasizes that each day has its own distinct challenges that should be addressed in their proper time. Each day contains enough troubles or difficulties ('evil' here meaning hardships, not moral wickedness) without borrowing from tomorrow's supply. This proverbial conclusion reinforces living within today's boundaries, trusting God's grace is parceled out daily rather than in advance.
