Matthew 5:4

King James Bible

"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted."

Commentary

Jesus pronounces divine favor on those experiencing deep grief—whether over personal loss, sin, or the world's brokenness. This paradoxical blessing inverts worldly values by declaring mourners spiritually fortunate, as their sorrow opens them to God's transformative work. The passive voice implies God himself will be the comforter, echoing Isaiah's messianic promises of consolation for Israel. This future certainty offers hope that present suffering will yield to divine restoration, both in this life and ultimately in God's kingdom.
