Matthew 5:14

King James Bible

"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid."

Commentary

Jesus declares his disciples to be luminaries in spiritual darkness, bearing divine truth to all nations. This metaphor follows his self-identification as light (John 8:12) and transfers that responsibility to believers, emphasizing their visible witness rather than hidden faith. Ancient hilltop cities were visible for miles, especially when lit at night, making concealment impossible. Jesus uses this geographical reality to illustrate that genuine discipleship naturally manifests in observable ways—the community of believers cannot and should not blend into the surrounding darkness.
