Matthew 4:4

King James Bible

"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

Commentary

Jesus responds to Satan's temptation by citing Scripture from Deuteronomy 8:3, establishing divine authority over personal desire. His use of 'It is written' demonstrates that God's recorded word serves as the ultimate defense against temptation. While physical sustenance is necessary, Jesus asserts it is insufficient for true life. This counters Satan's suggestion to turn stones into bread, teaching that spiritual needs transcend immediate physical hunger. God's spoken word—His commands, promises, and revealed will—provides the essential nourishment for human existence. Jesus emphasizes complete dependence on God's ongoing revelation rather than self-sufficiency or material provision alone.
