Matthew 4:10

King James Bible

"Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."

Commentary

Jesus directly commands Satan to depart, using his authority to end the temptation sequence. This marks the climactic rejection of Satan's final offer of worldly kingdoms in exchange for worship, with Jesus addressing the tempter by name rather than engaging further debate. Jesus grounds his rebuke in Scripture's authority, demonstrating that God's written word is the ultimate standard against temptation. This phrase introduces his third quotation from Deuteronomy during the wilderness temptations, modeling how believers should wield Scripture defensively. Quoting Deuteronomy 6:13, Jesus affirms the first commandment's demand for exclusive devotion to God. The parallel structure of 'worship' and 'serve' emphasizes that true allegiance involves both internal reverence and external obedience, completely rejecting Satan's proposition of divided loyalty.
