Luke 3:37

King James Bible

"Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,"

Commentary

This genealogical link highlights Methuselah (Mathusala), known as the longest-lived person in Scripture, and his father Enoch, who uniquely "walked with God" and was taken without dying. Their inclusion emphasizes the pre-flood patriarchs who maintained faith despite increasing wickedness. These three generations continue tracing Jesus's lineage through the antediluvian period, demonstrating unbroken human descent from Adam. Luke's reverse chronology (son to father) systematically establishes Jesus's connection to all humanity, supporting his role as universal Savior.
