Luke 3:33

King James Bible

"Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda,"

Commentary

This portion traces Jesus' lineage through three generations found in the Old Testament genealogies, particularly matching Ruth 4:19-20 and 1 Chronicles 2:9-10. These names establish Jesus' descent through the tribe of Judah, connecting Him to King David's ancestry. Phares (Perez) was one of the twin sons born to Judah and Tamar (Genesis 38), a scandalous union that nonetheless became part of the messianic line. By naming Judah, Luke explicitly links Jesus to the tribe from which the Messiah was prophesied to come (Genesis 49:10).
