Luke 3:32

King James Bible

"Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,"

Commentary

This traces Jesus' lineage through David's father Jesse and grandfather Obed, establishing the Davidic royal line. The connection to Jesse fulfills Isaiah's prophecy of a shoot from Jesse's stump, while Obed's inclusion recalls his mother Ruth's story of redemption. Boaz (Booz) was the kinsman-redeemer who married Ruth the Moabite, demonstrating God's inclusion of Gentiles in the messianic line. Salmon's marriage to Rahab (per Matthew 1:5) further emphasizes how God's grace incorporates outsiders into his covenant people. Nahshon (Naasson) was a prominent tribal leader of Judah during the Exodus, the first to bring offerings at the tabernacle's dedication. His placement here connects Jesus to Israel's wilderness generation and the establishment of proper worship.
