Luke 3:20

King James Bible

"Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison."

Commentary

This phrase emphasizes that Herod Antipas's imprisonment of John represents the culmination of his evil deeds. Luke uses this expression to mark it as the worst offense in a list of Herod's sins, including his unlawful marriage to his brother's wife. Herod silences John the Baptist by imprisoning him, attempting to suppress the prophetic voice that condemned his actions. This act foreshadows the rejection of God's messengers that will climax in Jesus's crucifixion, showing how political power opposes divine truth.
