Luke 3:11

King James Bible

"He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise."

Commentary

John the Baptist responds to the crowds who asked what they should do to demonstrate genuine repentance. This introduces his practical ethical teaching that moves beyond ritual to concrete action. John calls for radical generosity with material possessions, using the example of a coat—a basic necessity in ancient Palestine. Having two while others have none represents any surplus that could meet another's legitimate need. The principle extends from clothing to food, emphasizing that repentance manifests in sharing life's essentials. John's message challenges economic selfishness and calls for a community where resources flow to those lacking basic provisions.
