Luke 21:4

King James Bible

"For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had."

Commentary

Jesus observes wealthy worshippers giving from their surplus wealth to the temple treasury. Their gifts, while perhaps large in absolute terms, represent no real sacrifice since they come from excess resources that won't affect their lifestyle. The widow's extreme poverty stands in stark contrast to the wealthy donors. 'Penury' emphasizes not just being poor but lacking basic necessities, highlighting that her gift comes from deprivation rather than surplus. Her two small coins constituted her entire means of survival—literally 'all her life' in Greek. This total surrender demonstrates radical faith and devotion, making her gift proportionally greater than all others despite its tiny monetary value.
