Luke 21:2

King James Bible

"And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites."

Commentary

Jesus observes a widow—among the most vulnerable in Jewish society without male protection or inheritance rights. The emphasis on Jesus 'seeing' her highlights his attention to the overlooked and marginalized, contrasting with the wealthy donors mentioned in the previous verse. Two mites (Greek: lepta) were the smallest copper coins in circulation, together worth less than a penny. Her offering represents not just poverty but complete sacrifice, as she gives all she has to live on rather than keeping one coin for herself.
