Luke 20:1

King James Bible

"And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,"

Commentary

Jesus continues his daily ministry in the temple courts during his final week in Jerusalem, openly teaching and proclaiming the good news to the gathered crowds. The temple served as the religious center where Jewish teachers regularly instructed, but Jesus' growing popularity and authority threatened the established order. The three major groups of the Sanhedrin—chief priests (religious aristocracy), scribes (legal experts), and elders (lay leaders)—unite to confront Jesus. Their coordinated approach signals an official challenge to his authority, setting up the conflict that will dominate this chapter.
