Luke 12:46

King James Bible

"The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers."

Commentary

Jesus emphasizes the unexpected timing of the master's return, highlighting that judgment comes without warning to unfaithful servants. This echoes Christ's repeated teachings about his Second Coming occurring at an unknown hour, demanding constant readiness rather than presumption. This severe punishment literally means to cut in two, a graphic metaphor for complete judgment and separation from the master's household. In the parable's context, it represents the total severing of relationship between the unfaithful servant and his lord. The unfaithful servant's final destiny is placement among those who never believed, indicating that mere profession without faithful service results in the same judgment as outright unbelief. This stark warning underscores that true discipleship requires persevering faithfulness, not just initial commitment.
