Luke 12:40

King James Bible

"Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not."

Commentary

Jesus commands his disciples to maintain constant spiritual preparedness, building on his preceding parable about watchful servants. The word 'therefore' links this imperative to the lesson that faithful servants stay alert even when their master's return seems delayed. Jesus refers to himself using the messianic title 'Son of man' from Daniel 7:13-14, emphasizing his future return in divine authority. This coming refers to the Second Advent when Christ will judge the living and the dead. The timing will be completely unexpected, arriving when people feel secure and unprepared. This uncertainty is intentional—it compels believers to live in perpetual readiness rather than calculating dates or growing complacent.
