Luke 1:74

King James Bible

"That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,"

Commentary

This phrase continues Zechariah's prophecy about God's covenant promises, expressing the purpose of the Messiah's coming. The language emphasizes God's gracious initiative in bestowing salvation as a gift to His people. Zechariah recalls Israel's historic deliverances while pointing to a greater spiritual liberation through Christ. The "enemies" include both political oppressors and the deeper bondage of sin and death that the Messiah will overcome. The ultimate goal of deliverance is not mere freedom but fearless worship and service to God. This transforms the Jewish expectation of political liberation into a vision of spiritual freedom that enables bold, unhindered devotion.
