Luke 1:52

King James Bible

"He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree."

Commentary

Mary declares God's revolutionary action of dethroning the powerful—literally removing rulers from their positions of authority. This echoes Hannah's song (1 Samuel 2) and reflects God's pattern throughout Israel's history of humbling proud kings and empires. In divine reversal, God lifts up the humble, poor, and marginalized to positions of honor. Mary herself exemplifies this principle as a young, unmarried woman from Nazareth chosen to bear the Messiah, demonstrating God's preference for the lowly over the socially prominent.
