Luke 1:47

King James Bible

"And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour."

Commentary

Mary expresses deep, internal joy that transcends mere emotional happiness—her very spirit exults. The perfect tense 'hath rejoiced' indicates this joy began in the past and continues into the present, reflecting her sustained response to God's work in her life. Mary identifies God as her personal Savior, acknowledging her own need for salvation despite being chosen to bear the Messiah. This phrase echoes Hannah's prayer in 1 Samuel 2:1 and establishes that Mary's joy stems from her relationship with God as deliverer, not merely from her privileged role.
