Luke 1:33

King James Bible

"And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

Commentary

Gabriel declares that Jesus will rule over Israel, using 'house of Jacob' as the covenant name for God's people. This directly connects Jesus to David's throne and the messianic promises, while suggesting his authority extends beyond ethnic Israel to all who belong to God's household. Unlike earthly kings whose reigns end with death or conquest, this kingdom is eternal. The phrase emphasizes the divine nature of Christ's rule, fulfilling prophecies like Daniel 7:14 about an everlasting dominion. This parallel statement reinforces the eternal scope while shifting focus from duration to the kingdom's indestructible nature. Where human empires rise and fall, Christ's kingdom cannot be overthrown, conquered, or diminished.
