John 6:9

King James Bible

"There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?"

Commentary

Andrew identifies a young boy in the crowd who has brought food. The Greek word for 'lad' suggests a child or youth, highlighting the humble and unlikely source of what will become a miraculous provision. Barley loaves were the bread of the poor, coarser and cheaper than wheat bread. The 'small fishes' were likely dried or pickled fish commonly eaten with bread as a simple meal, emphasizing the meager nature of the available resources. Andrew's rhetorical question expresses human logic confronting an impossible situation—5,000 men plus women and children to feed. His doubt sets the stage for Jesus to demonstrate divine power that transcends natural limitations.
