John 6:70

King James Bible

"Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?"

Commentary

Jesus reminds the disciples of their divine selection, emphasizing his sovereign initiative in calling them to apostleship. This rhetorical question underscores both the privilege of being chosen and Jesus's complete awareness of each disciple's character from the beginning. This shocking declaration reveals Jesus's foreknowledge of Judas's betrayal, using 'devil' (diabolos) to indicate one who opposes God's purposes as an adversary. The statement creates dramatic tension by revealing that even among the chosen twelve, evil has infiltrated their inner circle.
