John 6:68

King James Bible

"Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."

Commentary

Peter speaks as the disciples' representative after many followers abandoned Jesus over his difficult teachings about being the bread of life. This moment marks a critical decision point where the twelve must choose whether to stay or leave. Peter's rhetorical question reveals both loyalty and logic—having recognized Jesus as uniquely authoritative, no alternative teacher or path exists. The question implies that leaving Jesus would mean spiritual homelessness. Peter identifies Jesus's teaching as the exclusive source of life beyond death, not merely wisdom for this world. This confession acknowledges that Jesus's words carry divine power to grant immortality, affirming his unique role as life-giver.
