John 6:65

King James Bible

"And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father."

Commentary

Jesus references his earlier teaching, emphasizing continuity with what he has already revealed. The word 'Therefore' connects this statement to the preceding context where many disciples were struggling with his difficult teachings about being the bread of life. Christ declares the complete inability of human effort alone to achieve saving faith. This absolute statement underscores humanity's spiritual helplessness and need for divine intervention in the process of salvation. The Father's sovereign grace is revealed as the essential prerequisite for anyone to come to Christ. This divine enabling or drawing reflects the doctrine of election, where God initiates and makes possible what humans cannot accomplish through their own will or works.
