John 6:33

King James Bible

"For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world."

Commentary

Jesus identifies himself as divine provision, echoing the manna God gave Israel in the wilderness. The phrase emphasizes that this bread originates from and belongs to God, distinguishing it from ordinary sustenance. This points to Christ's incarnation and divine origin, contrasting with the manna that merely fell from the sky. The personal pronoun 'he' shifts from speaking about bread as an object to revealing a person—Jesus himself. Unlike manna which sustained only Israel temporarily, this bread offers spiritual life universally and eternally. The scope expands from a single nation to all humanity, fulfilling God's promise to bless all nations through Abraham's seed.
