John 6:32

King James Bible

"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven."

Commentary

Jesus uses the double "verily" (amen, amen) to emphasize the absolute truth and importance of his correction. This solemn formula introduces a statement that challenges the crowd's understanding of the manna narrative they've just referenced. Jesus corrects the popular attribution, clarifying that the wilderness manna came from God, not Moses. This distinction is crucial as the crowd has just demanded a sign like Moses supposedly gave, misunderstanding both the source and nature of that provision. The contrast pivots from past to present tense and from temporary to "true" bread. Jesus identifies God as "my Father" while introducing himself as the genuine, eternal sustenance that the manna merely foreshadowed.
