John 6:22

King James Bible

"The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;"

Commentary

This occurs after Jesus fed the 5,000 and walked on water to join his disciples. The crowd had remained on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee overnight, still seeking Jesus after witnessing the miraculous feeding. The crowd recalls observing only one boat at the shore the previous evening. This detail establishes their confusion about Jesus's whereabouts, as they are trying to track his movements. They specifically remember Jesus did not board the boat with his disciples, creating a mystery about how he crossed the sea. This sets up the crowd's pursuit of Jesus and their eventual discovery that he miraculously appeared in Capernaum.
