"And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,"

Commentary

Evening marks the transition from Jesus' miraculous feeding of the five thousand earlier that day. In Jewish reckoning, evening began around 6 PM, and this temporal marker sets up the disciples' departure while Jesus remains on the mountain to pray alone. The disciples descend from the mountainous area near Bethsaida toward the Sea of Galilee, preparing to cross back to Capernaum. Their movement without Jesus creates the setting for the subsequent miracle of Christ walking on water, as they embark on what should have been a routine journey.
